We're Moving To 5by5!

When I started podcasting, I set out to emulate those I admired. I began learning everything I could from podcasters like Leo Laporte and Dan Benjamin. I didn’t know where it would lead me, but I immediately connected with the medium. I enjoyed doing it and kept looking for ways to do more.

As time went on and my skills grew, I knew that I wanted to make a career out of creating fine audio programming. I started this podcasting network with my friend and former Bro Show co-host, Mr. Terry Lucy. Since then, I have worked tirelessly with other amazing hosts to build 70Decibels to where it is today.

As the network continues to grow, our ambitions grow with it. Our hosts put out shows that deserve a larger audience, and my dream of a career in podcasting is within reach. To get to the next level, we need help. We need a better infrastructure and even more great people to support the network we have created. That’s why I’m thrilled to announce that 70Decibels is going to be moving to the 5by5 Podcasting Network.

Our shows deserve a solid platform to continue to grow. In my mind, there is no better place for this than 5by5 and no better person than Dan Benjamin to help us continue moving forward. When he first reached out to gauge our interest in joining his network, I was floored. As I said, Dan is a hero of mine, and I was honoured to have our network considered to join 5by5. As we continued to talk, and as I spoke with the other hosts, it was clear that this was the right opportunity for us.

So What’s Next?

All of the shows that you love are moving over to 5by5 so they can have a shiny new home, and so I and the other 70Decibels hosts can focus on what we love: creating great conversations.

The move will allow me to shake off the pressures that come with running a podcast network, while freeing me up to create some of the new shows that I’ve been dreaming about.

70Decibels is nearly 18 months old. It’s amazing what has happened in that time and we all know that we owe it all to you, the listeners. Without you tuning in every week, getting involved, asking questions, promoting us and letting us know when we fall short, we wouldn’t be here. I just want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for everything you’ve done to get us to this point. All of us at the network cannot wait to share what comes next. Thank you all so much.

If you have any questions or comments about the move, please Tweet or email me. I’ll be happy to help in any way that I can. Make sure you tune in to the shows and follow me on Twitter to find out more about what’s coming next.

Big week, you guys. Huge week!

You can hear me and Dan talk about this on Episode 33 of CMD+SPACE

The Golden Headphones Awards 2013

Last year we recorded the first annual Golden Headphone Awards and we had such a blast that we wanted to do it again!

So in late December we will be recording a special episode, in which we will try to gather all of the hosts on the network to hand out the awards.

But this is where we need your help. We have created a Nominations Questionnaire for you to complete. We want the Golden Headphones to celebrate the shows, moments and hosts that you love the most.

Once we have a decent amount of responses, we will freeze the voting and put together the special awards show for you. This will include speeches, clips from the shows, music, bright lights, tales from the red carpet and more!

So please, take the time to vote and let your voice be heard!

Our First Birthday

Exactly one year ago today, I announced the launch of the 70Decibels Podcast Network via this blog post. It was a huge day for me as it was the culmination of many months of work and planning. That day wasn’t chosen for any special reason; it was just the first day after I had put the finishing touches to the website.

Over the last year, a lot has changed. Many shows have launched and some have been retired. The network has grown magnificently and we are in a great place right now. I feel we have a lot of work we can do, but I am really happy with our current trajectory.

We have gained regular sponsorship with some awesome companies and we have some great partnerships at the moment that will continue this for some time to come. It was really important to me that we gained sponsors within our first year; it was key to our survival. Podcasts cost money to host (in both production and bandwidth terms) and for me to continue devoting so much of my time, I knew I’d need some form of compensation.

70Decibels consumes a lot of my life. I am always thinking about the network. Whether it’s through planning some pie-in-the-sky projects, dealing with the ‘business’ or planning a show. It’s always in the front of my mind. This thing here is my labour of love and I am so thrilled that I get to share it with a bunch of people that seem to really enjoy and care about what we do.

In S01E06 of Cooking With Brett And Myke, I outlined some goals for what I wanted to achieve in 2012:

  1. ‘Grow’ the network

  2. 3 more shows, me on one

  3. 20% increase by June

  4. Get a semi-serious sponsorship deal

I can certainly say that I achieved those and then some. Our audience has grown significantly, multiples of where we were at that time to where we are now—and that’s awesome. I’ve launched a whole heap of shows (a lot more than the ‘one’ I said I’d do) and we’ve brought in another 4 to the network that I’m not a part of. And, of course, we got the sponsorships we needed.

Looking back, I feel so happy about with where we’ve come. When I set these goals I wasn’t sure we could do it, they seemed lofty. But we did it and we did it much faster than I thought we would.

Over the last year I have been privileged to talk to some real heroes of mine (quite a lot of them more recently on CMD+SPACE) and I consider this to be a great honour. I really do feel like a very lucky man. What makes me even luckier though are the great people that I get to work with every week, the hosts and the people behind the scenes. These are the guys (and gal) that make things work; they are what spur me on every week to do more and more and who support me, no matter what. They keep the network going and I want to thank them, from the bottom of my heart.

But even more so, I need to thank you guys—the listeners. Because without you, there would quite simple be nothing. If nobody is listening, then we’re not broadcasting. I know these words are said by many – too often – but they are words that are said by me with great sincerity. Thank you so much for tuning in every week, for contacting us and telling us how much you love what we do and – most importantly – for sticking with us through thick and thin.

So, what’s next? At the moment I am really focused on making our current shows the best they can be. You will have noticed changes in format and release schedules and these changes are all to make sure I can give my best to the shows I produce and to allow the other shows to continue growing from strength to strength. And there’s going to be some more of that to come.

Right now I am not planning on launching anything new. However – as time has proven – that might not necessarily remain accurate for too long! I am always on the lookout for new shows to bring under our banner and I am sure there’ll be a few more over the next twelve months. I am also working on creating the ‘70Decibels Fan Club’. This was something I was hoping to have ready for today, but I’ve decided to rethink a few things to make it the best it can be. This is something I will have more information on soon, but I know you’re going to love it. And yes, T-Shirts are coming.

I could never have imagined – 12 months ago – that we would be where we are now. Thanks so much for sticking with us. Here’s to the next year.

Welcoming 'Generational'

This weekend we are so pleased to announce the debut of Generational on the 70Decibels network. Hosted by Gabe Weatherhead – otherwise know as the Macdrifter – Generational aims to explore how we use Technology in our lives and how we can make it fit better.

Each week Gabe is going to be joined by a great guest to discuss their workflows or how they use a certain aspect of technolgy to improve or something. On episode one he is joined by David Sparks and they discuss how to help new computer users get up and running.

I think you're really going to like this one. Download now and send along any feedback you may have!
